Alltrax Speed Controllers: What They Are and How They Work

If you own an electric golf cart, you may have heard of alltrax speed controllers. These are devices that control the speed and power of your golf cart motor, and allow you to customize your vehicle’s performance according to your needs and preferences. But what exactly are alltrax speed controllers, and how do they work? In this article, we will answer these questions and more.

What are alltrax speed controllers?

Alltrax speed controllers are electronic devices that regulate the current and voltage supplied to the electric motor of your golf cart. They are also known as motor controllers, electronic speed controllers, or ESCs.  They are made by Alltrax Inc., a company that specializes in motor controllers for the electric vehicle industry.

Alltrax speed controllers are compatible with most types of electric golf cart motors, such as DC (direct current) series wound, DC shunt wound, and AC (alternating current) induction motors. They are also compatible with most types of golf cart throttles, such as potentiometers, hall-effect sensors, and 0-5k ohm throttles.

Alltrax speed controllers have several features and benefits that make them stand out from other motor controllers in the market. Some of these are:

  • They are programmable using a USB cable and a free software called Alltrax Toolkit, which allows you to adjust various parameters such as speed, acceleration, regenerative braking, and more.
  • They have a high-performance 32-bit CPU that ensures smooth and precise control of the motor.
  • They have an integrated heat sink that mounts on any suitable surface and dissipates the heat generated by the controller.
  • They have an optional fan panel that provides extra cooling for high-temperature environments.
  • They have an LED status indicator that shows the operational state of the controller.
  • They have an active solenoid control relay that controls the main DC contactor and protects the controller from overcurrent.
  • They have an optional FN user control that provides interactive speed and regenerative braking control for different driving modes.

How do alltrax speed controllers work?

Alltrax speed controllers work by varying the current and voltage supplied to the electric motor of your golf cart. The current and voltage are determined by the throttle input, the battery level, the load, and the controller settings. The controller uses a technique called pulse width modulation (PWM) to switch the power on and off rapidly, creating pulses of varying width and frequency. The average value of these pulses is proportional to the desired speed and power of the motor.

The controller also monitors the feedback from the motor, such as the speed, torque, and temperature, and adjusts the PWM accordingly to optimize the performance and efficiency of the motor. The controller can also use regenerative braking, which means that it can reverse the direction of the current and voltage, and use the motor as a generator to slow down the vehicle and recharge the battery.

The controller communicates with the throttle, the solenoid, the motor, and the battery using various wires and terminals. The controller has color-coded quick terminals for easy connection and identification. The controller also has a USB port that allows you to connect it to your computer and use the Alltrax Toolkit software to program and customize the controller.

Choosing the right Solenoid For Your Golf Cart
It is very important to choose the right size Solenoid for the speed controller you are going to use. Your solenoid is what lets voltage or current go from batteries to the speed controller. Most are activated when you press the foot peddle, a microswitch lets voltage onto the small bolts of the solenoid. The 2 small bolts are the coil, this is what makes solenoids 12v, 36v , or 48v etc referred to as coil voltage.
